⚓🎗️Prevalence of domestic abuse - 1 in 4
The most recent estimates say that 1 in 4 adults in the UK have experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16 (Office of National Statistics, May 2025). According to the charity Refuge, 1 in 5 children have lived with an adult perpetrating domestic abuse. Similar numbers are found around the world. This means that every single one of us will come into contact with domestic abuse at some point; for example as a victim/survivor ourselves and/or as a friend, relative, colleague, partner, neighbor, team mate, of a survivor. We might not even be aware of it yet.
Research by the charity Restored has shown that the numbers in Christian communities are just as high as in non-Christian ones, yet many churches remain silent. Christian survivors and their supporters often face unique challenges. However, there are still very few resources for Christian contexts, and even less in languages other than English.
Jesus once said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31–32, NIV) These words weren’t spoken specifically about domestic abuse—but they still speak into it. Because abuse often hides in silence, secrecy, and shame. And truth is what begins to undo all of that. It makes space for healing, for justice, and for hope.
